TRY-OUT Info:

Try-outs will be held each year in April and Aug/Sept.  Females trying out in April MUST meet all minimum requirements (see required skills page).  Males do not have to tumble, but must show stunting skill.  All those making the team in April will be required to attend summer camp.

Try-outs in Aug/Sept will be used to fill remaining spots on the team.

*APRIL try-outs are only one-day try-outs, however all cheerleaders new to the RU team MUST bring a letter of reference from their most recent cheer coach (school or all-stars) AND one other teacher or coach.  These letters need to specifically address the cheerleader’s work ethic, attitude and ability to work with others.  All letters MUST include current contact information for the person giving the reference and must arrive in a sealed enveloped signed across the seal.

*AUG/SEPT try-outs for the RU cheer team are a two-cut process.  The first cuts will occur after the one-day try-outs.  All cheerleaders that make first cuts will practice for two weeks.  After two weeks the second cuts will occur as well as the announcement of the Red & White squads.

ONE-DAY TRY-OUTS

Prospective cheerleaders will learn two chants and a short dance, and will begin work on jumps, stunts and tumbling before lunch.  After lunch everyone will get the chance to continue work on stunts,  tumbling and jumps and practice the material learned in the morning.  Cheerleaders will then try-out in groups of three to four to showcase their talents.  Each cheerleader will perform two chants and a short dance.  In addition each cheerleader will show their jumping, tumbling and stunting abilities.

During April try-outs every effort will be made to put those that have to travel at the start of try-outs so they can begin their travels home in a timely manner.

**Cheerleaders can choose to perform the material taught that morning OR bring their own material to perform!

VIDEO TRY-OUTS

If you are interested in trying out for the RU cheer team, but unable to make the try-out date due to a conflict, you may submit a video.  Videos MUST BE RECEIVED by the RU Cheer Coaching Staff BEFORE THE SCHEDULED TRY-OUT DATE!

 Videos must include:

*A self introduction/bio

*A cheer

*A chant

*At least 4 8cts of a dance to music (not just counts!!)

*Jumps- A toe touch, double toe touch, pike and jump of choice

*Tumbling - standing and running.

(note- perform skills on a foam cheer floor if possible.  Spring floors will be taken into consideration when evaluating tumbling)

*Stunting - please show a variety of skills to include one legged stunts with flexibility & basket tosses.  If you are a back spot, then please be sure to turn the group to face the side so you are easily visible to the camera.

APRIL TRY-OUTS: Please submit your recommendations with your video.

NEW THIS YEAR: Please do not edit your video!   We don't need to see your technology skills, we need to see your cheerleading skills.  Turn on the camera and LEAVE IT ON until you finish your material.    Those at try-outs do not get the opportunity to edit their best performances together - neither do video entries.

Videos should be mailed to:

Melissa Kirkendall - Head Cheerleading Coach

PO Box 6913

Radford University

Radford, VA 24142

*Please add 2 additional days to projected mailing times to ensure the tape/DVD is delivered to the head coach.  The coaching staff is not responsible if video entries that are not received on time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

**Results of first cuts and April try-outs will be posted that night on the website.

NOTE: The coaching staff makes all decisions in regards to selection of the team, the competition team, selection of  captains, etc.  Talent, work ethic, attitude and spirit will all be considered when making decisions.
