becoming an RU cheerleader?

at RU!
Q: What kind of squads does RU
have? Is there a JV squad?
A: The Radford University Cheer

two smaller squads - the Small Co-Ed squad and the All-Girl squad.
All home games are split evenly with each squad cheering approximately
half.
Q: Do RU cheerleaders travel?
A: YES! Squad members travel to
tournament games for both men's and women's teams. Both team will
also travel to competition.
Q: Does RU have a competitive cheer
team?
A: YES! The both Co-Ed and All-Girl
also compete. The team competes at NCA nationals in Daytona Beach.
Q: What if I can’t make the
tryout date?
A: Video or DVD submissions are
acceptable, but the coach must receive tapes/DVDs before the try-out
date. Videos must be submitted in the format described
on the try-out information page.
**APRIL try-outs: Video/DVD MUST be accompanied by two letters of

Q: Are freshmen eligible to
try-out?
A: YES! Freshmen are welcome to come
to either the April or Aug/Sept try-outs. If the cheerleader is interested
in the April try-outs, but unable to travel to RU, they may submit a Video.
(Please see information about video try-outs on the try-out information page.)
Q: What is the practice schedule?
A: The finalized practice
schedule will be set by the coach after the basketball game schedules are
released, All practices (and games) are in the evenings or weekends, so
please make every attempt NOT to sign up for night classes (after 6pm).
The team practices 3 times a week for
2.5 to 3 hours per practice. In addition they attend a one hour tumbling
practice each week.
NOTE – In addition to the practice
schedule ALL cheerleaders are required to complete study hours (set by
academics) until the end of their portion of the season.
Q:
What are the required study hours?
A: All freshmen will meet a set number of study hours. Every semester
following the first semester of the freshman year, the number of hours will be
based on the student’s GPA. The lower the GPA, the more study hours will
be required. Cheerleaders at RU are student athletes…the STUDENT part
comes first!
Q: If I make the team
in April do I have to attend camp?
A: YES! All cheerleaders selected to
the team in April must attend summer camp. Cheerleaders must also pay for
their attendance at summer camp. Costs are normally around $250.
RU attends NCA summer camp at University of Louisville. The camp is
normally the first week on August.
